VIRTUAL WALI

Men and women face distinct challenges when it comes to counseling.

Not all sisters have a Wali. Depending on which school of thought you follow, a Wali is either required or strongly recommended, for sisters, to guide and guard the marriage process. From my experience, and putting the argument of which school of thought to
follow aside, having a Wali is highly advisable.

I’ve heard many horror stories from sisters looking for husbands who have been taken
advantage of both emotionally and physically. Likewise, I’ve heard stories from brothers,
and been a victim myself, of both financial and visa fraud. Having a third party guiding
the interaction between the potential spouses; making sure intimacy is constrained,
conversations and interactions remain halal, confirming intentions on both sides, makes
the process safer and smoother for both sides.

Of course, I cannot be a Wali, in the true sense of the word, but what I can do is:

  • Monitor communications to ensure they are halal and marriage-focused.
  • Manage expectations on both sides to ensure inappropriate emotional
involvement/attachment prior to Nikah is rooted out.
  • Communicate family expectations on both sides (including with the parents
    themselves).
  • Protect both parties from potential fraud.
  • Assist in bride price and/or dowry negotiations.
